Catheterisation – Male and Female
COURSE OVERVIEW
This course is delivered by a registered nurse and is a knowledge-based course. It will not recognise professional competency in catheterisation.
It is expected that the organisations will have in place a programme of competency development for the healthcare workers undertaking this activity.
AIMS
To ensure that all patients who are catheterised have the best quality of care, minimising infection risk and other side effects and maximising quality of life.
Duration and Format
This is a 3-hour programme usually delivered as a workshop session.
COURSE CONTENT
Students will cover:
- Scope of professional practice- what does the NMC say?
- Catheter Selection including, length, balloon size, charriere size
- Drainage options
- Removing a catheter
- Male and Female catheterisation procedure
- Problems and complications to be aware of
- Documentation
ASSESSMENT GUIDELINES AND STUDENT RESOURCES
There is no formal assessment for this programme. Students will receive handouts and a certificate of attendance.
Students will have the opportunity to carry out catheterisation on a male and female pelvis.
SUMMARY
Students will learn through practical sessions, discussions and training from a registered nurse.
SUITABLE FOR
Registered Nurses and Level 4 Nurse practitioners.
